Way back 1993 I got it into my head that I wanted to do a novelty music radio show. In the fall of 93 I went off to college at RIT in Rochester, NY. I immediately signed up as a member of the campus radio station, WITR, and proceeded to do absolutely nothing for the next year and a half. Partly because I had other things to worry about, and partly because the friend I was going to do the show with didn't have any extra time either. Eventually another friend, who was also a station member, convinced me that I wanted to start doing stuff. So I became the station's music librarian. At this point I still was not a DJ, although I had my licence. This was my only function at the station for another year and a half or so, when I finally got around to signing up for a shift.
At the time I was working a full-time evening job and didn't get out until midnight. I have always been a night owl, so I thought it was great when I signed up for a 1 - 3 am shift thursday night (well, friday morning). That was in the fall of 1996. I did the show alone, and at that point I played a lot of comedy, but not strictly. I was also notorious for playing long ( anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes) experimental or spoken word pieces. It was also not unlike me to go straight until 6 am when the next DJ came in. I had fun with this for a couple months when I got a hold of Tom (whom I had known for a while now) and asked him to cohost a novelty show at some ridiculous hour of the morning. He said ok.
So I got the show approved and we started doing our show. At first we didn't have a name, but we didn't really care. For now show was simply called ? .
Now, at our station is a huge white board, and on this board is a schedule of all the shows and shifts that currently exist. The board changes often, especially during breaks and between quarters (RIT isn't on semesters). So Thanksgiving break came along, which is between quarters for us, and everyone who was planning on being around over break was supposed to put an X on their show, and over the break everything without an X would be erased. So I put my X on my show, but for some reason the slot was erased anyway. Maybe it was the huge ? that confused them. Anyway I got fairly annoyed, took the dry erase marker and wrote "friggin here!" it nasty letters across my time slot.
We thought it was kinda funny, and eventually break ended and it was still there, so we left it. It is now the official name of the show. The first show under this name aired December 5th, 1996.
An update...
At some point the show moved from it's original 1-3am slot, to a more convenient and more listened to time slot of Saturday, noon to 2.
One day in October of 1998, we got an email from a website called comedyradio.net. They told us a little about themselves, and asked if we would be willing to have out show archived each week in RealAudio format for their site. WITR had been making plans to get a live RealAudio feed for over a year already, but progress was slow and we were getting anxious, so we agreed. The first show to be archived was the October 17th 1998 show.
WITR now broadcasts live at www.modernmusicandmore.com and has been since February 1999. Listen live every Saturday from noon to 2!
